Bali - Seminyak

The final destination on our Bali travels and a chance for us to get back on the boards.

We only had two days here so we were willing to make the most of it. We arrived early, took our bags to our B&B and off we walked to the beach! By the way, if you walk anywhere in Seminyak or Kuta you will constantly get asked if you want a taxi or a scooter. Personally, if we were staying longer than one night then we would have hired a scooter but all we wanted to do was surf and we were very close to the beach so there was no point.

We hired a surf board each (cost is 400,000 IDR (approx £23) for the day or 100,000 IDR (£6) for an hour) with a rash vest included. It's a great place to surf if you're a beginner and I believe the best time to get out there is in the morning before any wind picks up. My partner and I had a much better surfing experience here than in Biarritz, France. It also helped that we had foamy this time, instead of a fibre-glass board.

There are plenty of surf schools/camps available for those who have longer in Seminyak. A few friends have also recommended Canggu (north of Seminyak) as being a great place to spend a week surfing and chilling out, visit The Chill House. Unfortunately we didn't have time. After reading forums on beginner surf spots before we came out we thought we could have surfed at Balangan or Padang Padang, South Bali (see http://lois.onfabrik.com/blog/...) as well as Seminyak, but that wasn't possible. My advice is, if you are headed to Bali and you want to learn to surf or improve as a beginner then Seminyak, Kuta or Canggu is your best bet.

Whilst we were in Seminyak, we thought we had better check out the famous Potato Head with an infinity pool looking over Kuta beach and sunset views. If you want a sun bed then you need to get there early or I presume you can make a reservation. We were lucky to get on the sofas further back from the pool as someone had just left. These were free as were the towels on this occasion (we went to sit on our own but you are only allowed to use 'Potato Head' branded towels. I think usually you have to pay 25,000 IDR these). Security is tight and they check your bags on the way in. The service staff are extremely attentive and basically watch your every move which can feel slightly unnerving after a while! You aren't allowed to put any items such as sunglasses or hats on the table, they will provide you with a basket for these to go under the table. Unfortunately, on this occasion the sunset was non-existent due to the clouds so after one drink and a quick dip in the pool we decided to leave. It was no-El Kabron and came across very pretentious, but if you were with a group of guys/girls I can imagine it would be quite fun.

Recommendations:

Eat

I've been following this cafe for months on Instagram, salivating at every dish and finally we got to go here! Cafe Organic is exactly how I expected, catering for vegetarians, vegans, gluten and dairy intolerances. Incorporating all the 'super foods' to their menu and trendy ingredients such as coconut water and maca powder, I was in food heaven! I had the green detox juice accompanied with half of the Smokey Sweet Potato burger and half of the Veggie Whopper (luckily my partner was happy to fulfil my FOMO needs and share with me). Everything tasted delicious and if I was staying longer I would definitely had gone back! If only more cafe's like this existed in the world!

We only had one night in Seminyak and a friend of a friend recommended Fat Gajah. It's an Asian restaurant that specialises in noodles and dumplings. If we had looked this up before, we probably wouldn't have gone due to my gluten intolerance however the menu does cater for this. Our waiter was amazing, he spoke good english and even knew what gluten was (which was a rarity in Bali - probably didn't help that I hadn't learnt the translation). He went through the menu with us and picked out what I could eat that didn't contain gluten. This was one variety of dumplings (I forget the name) and the 3 Way Beef Tenderloin Curried Noodles. Both tasted absolutely incredible. The kitchen over-looks the restaurant so you can watch the chef's in action - so calm and precise (nothing like the English). The flavours that went into each dish were beautiful. Our meal and drinks did cost us quite a bit compared to others in Bali (probably the cost of 4 dinners on the Gili islands) but it was well worth it and if you compare it to eating this type of food in London, then the overall quality of the food and service was far better for half the price.

Sleep

We stayed the night at Bali Agung Village which was close to the beach and restaurants/bars in Seminyak. We got upgraded to a suite free of charge which was lovely and spacious with a comfortable bed, nice big bathroom, a large patio area at the front and a smaller one at the back. They had a good size pool with sun beds all around which came in handy after check out, before heading to the airport. The breakfast is buffet style, however they do bring your cooked eggs to your table. The standard of cleanliness is very high. Would highly recommend staying here and booking through booking.com.

Transport

Like I mentioned earlier, I recommend on hiring a scooter as it's quite a distance between Seminyak and Kuta if you wanted to explore and also there are some great beaches for surfing such as Canggu further up, or you can drive South for the day (http://lois.onfabrik.com/blog/...).

A taxi from Seminyak to the airport cost us 150,000 IDR (approx £8.75). Normally the journey takes around 30 minutes but if you are traveling in peak time such as on a Saturday, give yourself longer as traffic can be bad.
